Private Onsite Wastewater Treatment System

POWTS Maintenance

Your septic tank is part of a Private Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (POWTS) that requires regular maintenance, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. It’s important to have your tank cleaned out regularly to prevent sludge and scum buildup. Failure to clean your tank regularly can result in a clog in your outlet pipe or drain field. This can lead to a premature and costly system failure.

How often should you have your septic tank pumped? It depends on the size of your household, the volume of water you use, and whether you use a garbage disposal, but a good rule of thumb is to have it serviced every 2 to 3 years.

Holding Tanks

Because all of your home’s wastewater goes into the holding tank, holding tanks require pumping more frequently than a septic tank. Most of our holding tank customers have their tanks pumped every 4 to 8 weeks. The frequency depends on the capacity of your tank and the amount of wastewater your household generates.

Selling Your Home?

If you are buying or selling your home in Wisconsin, it is important that you have a septic system inspection. We perform time-of-sale inspections for home buyers and sellers – inspecting your drain field, septic tank, pumps and alarms to ensure everything is in working order and compliant with the current code. We provide a final written report with photos to you and your realtor.
